Interdisciplinary Studies Concentration

Louisiana Christian University has developed a program which encourages student initiative for structuring one’s own major area of instruction. The interdisciplinary concentration allows students to construct programs of study in keeping with career objectives, plans for graduate or professional study, or particular scholarly or intellectual interests. A student may submit an application for an interdisciplinary concentration after earning 30 semester hours of credit with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Applications should be submitted by the time a student has completed 75 semester hours of credit. The procedure for obtaining approval for an interdisciplinary concentration is outlined below.

  1. Students will obtain an application for interdisciplinary concentration from the registrar’s office. The registrar’s office will complete the information regarding hours earned and GPA. Students will list the disciplines which will be a part of the concentration and request an advisor from each of those areas. Students will also request one of those advisors to be appointed chairperson of the committee. The application must be submitted to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  2. Based on the student requests, the Vice President for Academic Affairs will appoint a representative of each discipline represented in the concentration to make up their interdisciplinary committee.
  3. Students will submit a written proposal to the committee which sets out the objectives and the courses to be taken in the program. Students must meet all general graduation requirements including but not limited to the Central Curriculum, junior/senior hours, residency requirements, and the oral proficiency requirement. The interdisciplinary concentration must include a minimum of 45 semester hours taken in at least three departments of instruction. Students must complete at least twelve hours in each area.
  4. The chairperson will arrange a meeting of the committee at which students will be required to defend the proposal. The committee will recommend approval or disapproval of the program to the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
  5. During the student’s last semester, the committee will meet with the student for the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of the student’s program.

Depending upon the areas of study, students will be awarded either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science Degree.
