The Department of Language and Literature’s mission is to cultivate students’ personal, intellectual, and spiritual growth, equipping students for lives of learning, leading, and serving. By focusing on both language and literature, the faculty offer courses that provide students with a historical perspective, cultural awareness, and analytical skills that help students to think, speak, and write well and apply knowledge wisely.

The English requirement in the Central Curriculum is based on three courses designed to improve written communication and increase knowledge of the historical and cultural significance of literature through a Christian worldview. EN 101  concentrates on personal, reflective writing to strengthen the ability to focus on a significant thesis and develop a clearly organized essay with grammatical correctness. EN 102  introduces the student to integrating research in writing through literary analysis. EN 200  or EN 201  provides additional practice in persuasive writing with an emphasis on the longer, more complex, literary analysis essay with the use of documented research.

Each student entering the University Writing Program must present ACT scores. Students who score below an 18 in English indicate the need for additional preparation and will be required to take EN 091   and/or EN 100  before enrolling for EN 101 . Students entering without any ACT score in English will be required to take an entrance exam or begin with EN 091 .
