ED 503  - Advanced Topics in Education - Reading/Literacy


This course examines principles of literacy development and learning in children. This course provides fundamental knowledge in effective standards-aligned and effective literacy instruction and assessment practices for all learners using high quality instructional materials. This evidence-based literacy instruction will focus on phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Instruction will address all five components of evidence-based reading instruction, delivered with explicit, systematic and sequential structures that enhance the progress and learning of students. Coursework provides opportunity for candidates to learn, practice, and utilize diagnostic assessments and targeted instruction strategies to address the student needs, including those with learning differences. Prerequisites: Permission of the Coordinator of the Department of School of Education. 1-3 hrs
